What is BEEL?

The Bio-Energy & Environmental Lab (BEEL) is a research laboratory housed in the Water & Environmental Engineering (WEE) program of the Masdar Institute (MI).  Themes of research at BEEL address 3 key challenges faced by sustainable societies.  These are:

1.       Development of Renewable and Carbon Neutral Sources of Energy

2.       Waste Minimization and Reutilization

3.       Resource Protection and Preservation

Scope of Research Activities

All research activities at BEEL are mapped to the 3 key challenges facing sustainable societies.  The scope of research activities conducted at BEEL includes:

Ø  Integrated biological processes for waste treatment, low-temperature energy generation, and resource recovery

Ø   Biologically-catalyzed transformation pathways of contaminants

Ø   Utilization of renewable materials in biological processes

Ø   Fate and transport of contaminants in natural and engineered environments

Ø   Human-health risk assessment of new materials and products

Masdar Institute

The Masdar Institute is a private, not-for-profit, independent, research-driven institute developed with the support and cooperation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Institute offers Masters and (eventually) PhD programs in science and engineering disciplines, with a focus on advanced energy and sustainable technologies.
